Did you think I was going to squirm
when you sent me that registered letter?
Think again it's stronger I get
under threat.

CC addressees and legal advisers.

with the same false allegations.

It's almost a year now since his letter

I have since heard through the grapevine
that both of you have fallen out.

WHAT RHYMES WITH TANK?

The Small Impact Writers' had a wee get together on Thursday 15th December in the New Grange Hotel Navan.
While they sat at table waiting for their meal to be served one of the ladies present asked "what do you think our next project should be?" One of the men present answered " I think we should write something about the Septic Tank charges ".
Oh that's a great idea and what word rhymes with tank ", she replied. There was an instantaneous outburst of uncontrolable laughter from the group. I bit my lip and suggested, Yank, someone else said crank and Pat was heard to say bank, this set the tone for the evening and the stories began to flow and a great night was enjoyed by all.

Who said the crack was 90 in the Isle of Man, hear this the crack was 99.9 in the New Grange. Up ye boy ye.

Why Wear a Poppy?

I attended the commemorative day readings for Armistice Day on 11th November in Navan library.
The event began at the 11th hour with Ernest McBride leading prayers for the fallen. Then a silence was observed and the Last Post was played by Sean Lynch. Tom French was Master of Ceremonies and read some of his favourite poems specially for the occasion.

A letter from the front dated 15th July 1917 was read out. The letter was from,

1/9 London Regiment
Q. V. Rifles B Company
5 Platoon B.E.F. France.
Who came from Johnstown, Navan.

There was a lot of poems read from WW1 and Edel Gillick read a poem of her own specially written for the occasion and Frank Murphy read a war poem he wrote from a time he spent somewhere in the Middle East.
Other readers were: Jim Byrne, Sean Reilly, Willie Hodgins, Tom French, Mollie Kane, Seamus Smyth, Jim O'Brien and others whose names I don't know apologies to them all.

I read three pieces myself, a piece of fiction by Mark Twain titled The War Prayer, which he wrote in 1904 based on the USA/ Philippines War and two poems which I reproduce here.

The first poem, Why Wear a Poppy, by: Unknown Poet. The poem was found in a house in Wales which was being renovated in 1962.

Why Wear a Poppy?

" Please wear a Poppy ", the lady said

And held one forth, but I shook my head.

Then I stopped and watched to see how she would fare-

Her face was old and lined with care,

But beneath the scars that the years had made

There remained a smile that refused to fade.

A boy came whistling down the street,

Bouncing along on carefree feet.

His smile was full of joy and fun,

" Lady ", he said, " may I have one? "

As she pinned it on I heard him say

" Why do we wear a Poppy today? "

The lady smiled in her wistful way

And answered, " This is remembrance Day.

The Poppy there is a symbol for

The gallant men who died in war,

And because they did, you and I are free.

That's why we wear a Poppy, you see! "

I had a boy about your size,

With golden hair and big blue eyes.

He loved to play, and jump and shout-

Free as a bird he would race about.

As years went on he learned and grew

And became a man as you will too ".

" He was fine and strong with a boyish smile,

But he seemed with us just a little while.

When war broke out he went away-

I still remember his face that day,

When he smiled at me and said, Goodbye-

I'll be back soon, so please don't cry ".

But the war went on and he had to stay-

All I could do was wait and pray.

His letters told of the awful fight-

I can still see it in my dreams at night.

With tanks and guns and cruel barbed wire,

And mines and bullets, the bombs and fire ".

" Until at last the war was won,

And that's why we wear a Poppy, son ".

The small boy turned as if to go

Then said, " Thanks lady, I'm glad to know.

That sure did sound like an awful fight,

But your son- did he come home alright? "

A tear rolled down each faded cheek-

She shook her head but didn't speak.

I slunk away- head bowed in shame

And if you were with me , you'd have done the same.

For our thanks in giving is oft delayed,

Though our freedom was bought and thousands paid.

And so you see- when a Poppy is worn,

Let us reflect on the burden borne

By all those who gave their very all

When asked to answer their Country's call.

That we at home in peace may live-

Then wear a Poppy- remember- and give!

Back

They ask me where I've been,

And what I've done and seen,

But what can I reply

Who know it wasn't I,

But someone just like me,

Who went across the sea

And with my head and hands

Killed men in foreign lands...

Though I must bear the blame

Because he bore my name.

Christopher was born in South Africa in 1971 and moved to Ireland a number of years ago where he lived in Robinstown Co. Meath before recently moving to Navan. He writes mainly poetry in which he conveys a strong belief in Equality and Human Rights for all people. He has also championed the rights of animals and is the Author of, Hidden Dreams, a collection of poetry.

And Sean Reilly made it a hit in the Solstice Art Centre on the night of 5th October 2011 when the Small Impact Writers' launched their 2012 calendar in aid of the Homeless.

When presidential candidate Michael D. Higgins, visited Navan, on Tuesday 11 October I presented him with a 2012 Calendar which was published a week earlier by the Small Impact Writers' to raise funds for the Drogheda Homeless Aid.

I told Michael D, that I hope to see the calendar hanging in the Aras when I visit there.

Ann Ritter, above reading her poem, Nobody's Neighbour.

Ann was born in Dublin, but now lives in Navan. She has been a member of the Small Impact Writers' Group for three years. She has lived for several years in Germany, Japan and Australia. Ann writes mostly poetry but has a number of short story's to her credit. She had a story titled ( That Devil Called Love ) published last year in a antology written by the group titled Hidden Depths.

Edel Gillick, is a story teller and writer. She is the author of The Boy That Fell Down the Well, a childrens book highlighting the social problem of bullying and racism but in a genre suitable for children. She also facilitates creative writing classes for adults.

I had a very pleasant evening in Trim Library, last Thursday 6th October, when over twenty local writers' turned up to celebrate All Ireland Poetry Day.
Tom French, and Tommy Murray, kept things running smoothly.
I was out canvassing all that afternoon and when I came home, I put my camera battery on to charge in preparation hoping to get a few shots.
I arrived in the library with my camera on my belt only to discover that I forgot to install the battery.

I read three poems from my school days. I thought I'd reproduce them here.

Oh in case I forget! vote Michael D. Higgins for president.

A Ballad of Athlone

Does any man dream that a Gael can fear?
Of a thousand deeds let him learn but one!
The Shannon swept onward, broad and clear,
Between the leaguers and broad Athlone.

' Break down the bridge! ' Six warriors rushed
Through the storm of shot and the storm of shell:
With late but certain victory flushed,
The grim Dutch gunners eyed them well.

They wrenched at the planks ' mid a hail of fire:
They fell in death, their work half done:
The bridge stood fast; and nigh and nigher
The foe swarmed darkly, densely on.

' Oh who for Erin will strike a stroke?
Who hurl yon planks where the waters roar?'
Six warriers forth from their comrades broke,
And flung them upon that bridge once more.

Again at the rocking planks they dashed;
And four dropped dead; and two remained:
The huge beams groaned and the arch down-
    crashed;-
Two stalwart swimmers the margin gained.

St Ruth in his stirrups stood up and cried:

The Presence of God

Navan Writer's Group, ( The Small Impact Writers' ), had a very successful launch of their 2012 Calendar in the Solstice Art Centre, Railway Street, Navan, last Thursday 5th October.

Meath GAA personality Sean Boylan who was to launch the calendar was unable to attend.

Lordmayor Anton McCabe was away at a conference and Councillor Joe Reilly came to the rescue.

The calendar was printed by Costello Print in Navan and Navan Town Council sponsored the project.

Edel Gillick and Jimmy Byrne of the writers group, introduced the members who read their own contributions from the calendar. John Doyle Photography enriched each contribution with his photos depicting the many facets of homelessness in our times.

Paul Murphy, of Drogheda Homeless Aid thanked the writers' group for their help and generosity towards the Drogheda Homeless Aid's hostel at North Strand, Drogheda.

Sean Reilly, Jay Rill and Caroline Reel of the Writers' Group delighted the audience with their singing.

I videoed some of the members reading and singing and hope to post a few vids over the next few days.

There is a second launch of the calendar planned for Thursday 20th October at 5.30pm in the Highlane's Art Gallery Drogheda.

The Golden Years

From next week local television station P5TV are presenting a new series titled The Golden Years. The programme will feature 25 interviews with people from the Navan area talking about the town from 1920 to the present day. The programme will run for 25 weeks with a different person featured each week. The Navan Writer's Group ( Small Impact Writer's ) are launching a calendar for year 2012 in aid of the Homeless Center in Drogheda. The calendar features poems written by members of the group to the theme of Homeless.

The launch will take place in the Solstice Art Center, Navan, on 5th of October 2011 by legendary Meath Man Sean Boylan at 7pm. All are welcome. It will also be on sale in both Navan and Johnstown Shopping Centers on Saturday 8th.

There will be a further launch by Lord Mayor Paul Bell of Drogheda, on Thursday 20 October in Newlane Art Gallery, Drogheda at 7-30pm.

I sat in the back of a Suzuki Swift car on Market St, Trim, yesterday afternoon reading from Jonathan Swift's, Gulliver's Travels. Two American ladies sat in the back seat with me listening and paid €2 each for the privilege. So intrigued were they with my reading that they invited me to next years New York St Patricks Day Parade.

Michael Farry, sat in the driving seat, under instructions from Paddy Smith that I was to read every word and page allotted to me. Michael Regan sat in the front passenger seat, I didn't quite know why thought perhaps he was just feeling a bit tired or wanted to get out of the sun or maybe he just wanted to be brought back to his childhood once more. When I was finished reading Paddy enquired from Michael Farry if I had read all three pages Michael agreed that I did. He then asked Michael Regan if I got all the big words right, Michael hesitated for a few moments and then uttered I....I.. think he did. So on Michael Regans word Paddy decided to give me a certificate.

As I walked down the street towards my car with Michael Regan, he said " you know the boys are worried about tomorrow's Battle they think Murray is going to do it again.

Labour Councillor Anton Mc Cabe was selected by the council to be it's new Lord Mayor when outgoing Lord Mayor, independent Councillor Phil Brennan reached the end of his term in office.

The meeting was attended by a large number of Anton's supporters and family.

A function was held afterwards in the Back Room of the Lantern on Watergate Street.

Anto can be seen below just after receiving his chain of office and below that Jim O'Brien ( Jimbo ) can be seen rallying the troops in the Back Room of the Lantern.

SOLSTICE FESTIVAL

Meath Arts Group, are holding their Exhibition in Navan Library, from 21st June until Friday 1st July in conjunction with the Solstice Festival. The exhibition will be officially opened by Navan's new Lord Mayor CLLR Anton McCabe, Labour Party on Thursday 23rd June at 7pm in the library.
Events will be happening in a number of venues and locations throughout the town until 26th June celebrating the Summer Solstice the venues include: Solstice Art Centre, Railway St, the Happy Bear Cafe, Watergate St, Beggy's Bar, Bridge St, Earls Kitchen, Old Cornmarket, and Tara Na Ri at Garlow Cross.Throughout the Festival week, a numberof local groups including Meath Arts Group, Navan Rehab Care, Tain Daycare, Kells and Dunshaughlin Mental Healthcentres, Bri Meath and Louth, Youthreach Progression, and Navan Active Retirement Group present an art trail in the town.

MEATH WRITERS' CIRCLE, MONTHLY MEETING.

I attended the monthly meeting of The Meath Writers' Circle, which was held at The Castle Hotel Trim, on Thursday 5th May. There was 14 members present and this lead to a great nights reading.

Frank Murphy was busy recording with his camera. Most members read from their own work while I read a piece titled " Kilkelly Ireland ".

130 years after his great grandfather left the small village of Kilkelly in Co. Mayo, Peter Jones found a bundle of letters sent to him by his father in Ireland. The letters tell of family news, births, deaths, sales of land and bad harvests. They remind the son, that he is loved, missed and remembered by his family in Kilkelly.
After I read the piece Sean Reilly informed me that the piece was a song. Frank Murphy recorded most of those who read on the night and will be uploading to his blog soon.

Nothing has changed.

Nowhere is safe.

The vast majority of deaths

A cowardly act

It's that time of year again,the annual Jim Connell Festival will take place in Crossakiel and Kells over the May Bank Holiday.

The festival will include debate, workshops, lectures and panel discussions on issues relevent to the left and the trade union movement.

The festival celebrates the life of Jim Connell, the author of the socialist anthem " The Red Flag " who was born in Kilskyre in 1852.

Friday 29th April there will be music by " The King and I " in McCabes Bar Crossakiel

Tommy Murray reading at the monthly meeting of the Meath Writers' Circle in the Castle Hotel Trim 6th April 2011. The meeting was very well attended and two new members Joined up, names not to be released until after probationary period is served. There was a lively discussion concerning a famous battle which has been held annually for the past few years in conjunction with the Trim Swift Festival called "The Battle of the Books".

A secret weapon in the form of a piece of prose was read which it is hoped will decide the battle again this year.

Mums the word, the other gang have spies everywhere..

James Linnane, has just published his latest book " THE LIFE AND TIMES OF A GOTCHA "

James who comes from Balliver in Co. Meath, is a member of the Meath Writers' Circle, although Paddy Smyth, of The Boyne Writers likes to claim him as one of theirs.
I've known James for a number of years now and have met him at a number of reading events throughout Co. Meath, where he never fails to entertain with his wonderful stories. I had the honour of accompanying James to Trim last year during the Swift Festival where we judged a pub row together. Things nearly got out of control when the captain of the loosing team questioned James. James soon sorted things out and saved the night and perhaps with it the entire festival. They the loosing team had no way of knowing that James had once pulled up an ash tree with his own bare hands and he was only 10 years old at the time.

Chuck"n"Cha

Congratulations to Joan Mc Guinness, who is a member of the Small Impact Writers Group based in Navan Library on the publication of her book "Chuck"n"Cha, a delightful childrens story. A story about two budgies, one called Chuck ( short for Chuckles,) and the other is called Cha (short for Charlotte ). Chuck and Cha were childhood lovebirds and were very happy together untill one day Chuck accidentally opened the lock on his cage and wandered off and got lost leaving Cha broken hearted.
Chuck wanders about frightened and Cha goes looking for him.

Book Launch

Christopher R. Azzie was born in South Africa in 1971. Christopher is both Irish and South African and he lives in Robinstown Co. Meath today where he is a student. Christopher joined the Small Impact Writers' Group in Navan and he has just published his new book "Hidden Dreams". He will be launching it on Thursday 24th March in Navan Library at 7pm.

The best way I can describe Christopher's book is to say that it's a voice in the wilderness but a voice for good. Christopher's poems have a lot of sadness in them but they give hope and they have soul too. That's what I like about them they've got soul. They champion the downtrodden the forgotten the abused and the plight of the African Elephant and Rhino in a very effective way.

Below is the middle part of a poem titled "African Memories"

Thinking back to those years, long gone.

I remember the things that I loved so very much.

The thundering water of the waterfalls and rivers.

The mighty majestic, magnificent mountains,

That runs from one side of South Africa to the other.

The red and brown coloured soil.

Some say the colour of the soil is that of blood,

For those who lost their lives fighting over the land.

The yellow dust, that covered everything that you held so dear,

Created from the mine dumps that covered the country side,

One by one they disappear from eyes view.

Congratulations to Tommy Murray and the Junior Writers' Group, who performed their latest compositions in conjunction with the Navan Shamrock Festival in the Navan Library last Tuesday to a packed house.

This is the groups 4th book and there's 26 young writers' featured in it.

Reading Event

The Small Impact Writers' held a very successful reading event last Thursday in conjunction with the Navan Shamrock Festival. The theme of the event was In My Father's Time. A nostalgic trip from the past to the present day.

Edel Gillick, who presented the show referred to a famous speech by " Eamon De Valera and later she read from her own work about bog monsters, (the friendly type) who eat: sweets, Pegs Legs and Bulls Eyes, to the delight of the children present. Jimmy Byrne read his piece titled, "In My Father's Time" and Pat McConnon read about men travelling on bicycles to save the hay and to look the part he even wore bicycle clips and braces on the night, the type worn by the famous Swarty Smyth. Ann Ritter read a poem in memory of Bishop Michael Power and the thousands of refugees who left their homeland in coffin ships during the famine of 1847 and headed for Toronto Canada where the bishop caught Typhus and he died. Mossie Forde read from her book Mossie's Story and Pat Duffy read a piece on farming I think!.
Lorrita Maher -Bordalo played the tin whistle and Christina Conroy performed an Irish dance.

The event was complimented by an exhibition by Meath Arts group.

Alan McAlister won first prise in a Junior Prose Competition the theme for the competition was Twins.

Bill Slattery played a tune on the flute and he also accompanied me when I read a piece titled" The First Day of July" by Trim man Jimmy Peppard.

Shamrock Festival Literary Events

To celebrate Library Ireland Week and Navan Shamrock Festival, Navan Library presents a Creative Writing Workshop with Edel Gillick to be held on Wednesday 9th March from 10am - 1pm in the library.

Booking essential - no charge applies.

As part of the Shamrock Festival The Small Impact Writers' Group are holding an evening of reminisence through music, poetry and prose, to the theme of " In My Father's Time ".

The event will be held in Navan Library on Thursday 10th March at 7pm.

And if that's not enough an evening with Tommy Murray, Meath's best known poet and the Junior Creative Writers' Group will be held in Navan Library on Tuesday 15th March at 7pm.

Featured Writers'

The Small Impact Writers', in the words of Paddy Smith, made a "BIG IMPACT" when they were featured readers last Thursday in the Knightsbridge Retirement Village Hall. Six members of the group read from their book " Hidden Depths " a collection of short stories and poems.
Paddy handed the mic to Edel Gillick and she did a great job of introducing the readers.

Pat McConnon gave a beautiful reading of Niall's Story a story of the love between a father and son at times very moving and yet at the same time full of joy. Sean Reilly read his story " I Am Royalty ", a story about the finest and most good-looking buck on the mountain, enough about that, if you want to find out more get the book. Ann Ritter had the audience in the palm of her hand as she related the story " That Devil Called Love " in Ann's own words the characters in her story are figments of her vivid imagination, the city of Staufen, where Faust allegedy sold his sole to the devil in the 16th century does exist and is located in the South-West of Germany. Jim Byrne read a number of his poems to great applause. I read the story "YARRI"
I travelled to Australia in August 2002. An incident happened when I was there which inspired me to write the story, YARRI, is better known as The Hero of Gungadai. Edel Gillick, read from her book " The Boy Who Fell Down the Well " to hear Edel reading

The Small Impact Writers' held a very successful Poetry and Short Story Competition last night, in the Meath County Library, Navan, in conjunction with St Valentines Day. The Theme for the competition was " Love Lost, Love Found"

Edel Gillick and Jim Byrne were presenters on the night and kept the audience entertained with their wit and even read some of their own poetry. Pat McConnon who is also a member of the writers' Group and therefore barred from entering the competition, started the readings with his interpretation of the Trush's mating call which if you listen carefully can be heard at the beginning of the video below. Other members of the group who read were: Kieran Murray, Christopher. R Azzie. Mossie Forde, Sean Reilly entertained the audience with his singing and I made an attempt at singing myself.

Hidden Depths

The Small Impact Writers' Group have been invited to the Knightsbrook Village Hall onThursday 17th February, where they will be featured guests on the night. The event which is being organised by the Boyne Writers' will start at 8pm.
Members of the group will read from their first collection of short stories and poems titled Hidden Depths.

It's that time of year again when things begin to brighten up. Already you can see a stretch in the evenings. It's almost St Valentines Day.
With this in mind the Navan Writers' Group are holding a Short Story and Poetry creative writing Competition.
THE THEME FOR THE COMPETITION IS: " LOVE LOST, LOVE FOUND ".
Finals of the competition will be held at NAVAN LIBRART, RAILWAY STREET ON
February 10th. 2011 at 7pm.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF THE COMPETITION

THE SHORT STORY MUST BE NO MORE THAN 3000 WORDS.
SHORT STORY WILL BE JUDGED BY MEMBERS OF THE WRITERS' GROUP AND AN OUTSIDE ADJUDICATOR. Judges decision final.

THE POETRY WINNER WILL BE CHOSEN ON THE NIGHT, FEBRUARY 10 BY THE AUDIENCE.

The Small Impact Writers' will be launching their first publication (Hidden Depths) on Thursday 9th December, in Navan Library at 7pm.

Hidden Depths is a collection of short stories and poems stories from far and near, places as diverse as: Poland where during WW2 everything changed, from the Black Forest in Germany to Gundagai in New South Wales in Australia to the rugged mountains of Tora Bora in Afghanistan and our own ancient hill of Tara where the Phantom Whistler has been heard since 1534 and of course the curse of Tara and from there to above all places Sweeney's Garden where ever that is?
And for the season that's in it there's a story or two with a Christmas flavour.

Famine Trilogy

I had a very enjoyable trip to Drogheda on Wednesday 24th November in the company of Tommy Murray and James Linnane. We attended a reading of the Viaduct Bards, all women, it was like falling into an orchard and I must say they made us very welcome.

Tommy done the driving and I'm glad to say James was navigater having been there before with the Boyne Writers' he was able to tell Tommy when to turn right or left. I just sat in the back listening with my fingers crossed.
As we turned right at the Round O, Tommy noticed a very large light straight ahead. James explained that it was a full Moon. He told Tommy to keep travelling towards it as it seemed to be directly over Drogheda.
On our way home James again explained to Tommy that this time the Moon would be to our left.
When we reached Navan, Tommy turned into Woodlands and dropped me off at my house. Just as I was getting out of the car I heard James tell Tommy to turn left on to the Trim Road when leaving Woodlands and that this time the Moon would be on the Right.

Bard Of Armagh

Jimmy Rafferty, became the Bard of Armagh for an unprecedented fourth time with his poem ' HER MAJESTY'S PLEASURE 'at a packed Armagh City Hotel on Friday 19th November 2010.

I travelled to the event with Tommy Murray, who was one of twelve contestants battling for the title. Tommy was happy to make it to the short list with his poem ' ON BEING POLITICALLY CORRECT '

Newcomer Colleen Downham took the inaugural Rosemary Twohig trophy with a superb performance of 'LADY GAA GAA '.

Navan Hospital Rally

Thousands turned up for the Save Navan Hospital Campaign. Official sources put the figure at 10000 I reckon there was a lot more. The route taken was from The Enterprise Center down the Trim Road, then turned right at Mercy Convent, past St Mary's Church at the Fair Green, up Ludlow Street, turned left at the Square up Trim Gate Street then up Brews Hill and on to Pairc Tailteann. When the head of the march reached Pairc Tailteann the tail was stilll leaving the Enterprise Center on the Trim Road.
The marchers took part in the rally to oppose cuts in services at Our Lady's Hospital in Navan Co. Meath.

Mossie's Story

Mossie Ford was born in Trim Co. Meath in 1949 the same year as myself. I didn't know Mossie until just over a year ago when she joined the 'Small Impact Writers' who are based in Navan Library. Although Christened Mary, she is better known as Mossie.
Mossie is the third eldest in a family of twelve. She has written a book about her life and has dedicated it to her late parents - Michael and Eileen Forde R.I.P.

Mossie was born with Cerebral Palsey, her movement and speech are restricted and she has lived most of her life in institutions. But she is a very brave courageous person who has recently moved into independent living. Mossie's Story is beautifully written, at times humorous, at times sad but from the heart throughout.

Mossie also paints, in fact the cover of her book is one of her paintings. The Authors Friend have a picture slide show on their website depicting some of Mossie's paintings and photos.

Mossie's book will be launched in Navan Library on Thursday 4th November at 7-30pm.
The book will be on sale to the general public soon but can be bought from the Online Cathologue of The Author's Friend. Mossie's book would make an ideal Christmas present for that someone special in your life.

The event was organised by the Boyne Writers' to celebrate All Ireland Poetry Day 7th October. It was an enjoyable occasion with many contributers reading their favourite poems to an enthusiastic audience.

At 7pm another successful poetry event was held in Navan library organised by Tom French of the Meath County Library service and Tommy Murray Meath Writers' Circle. Just like in Trim the event was well supported.
I enjoyed the event enormously but had to leave early due to other commitments but I managed to take a few photos before leaving.

Congratulations to Kieran Murray, ( Kyrie ) on the publication of his new book " SUMMER SOLSTICE " A beautifully written book of contemproary poetry. Kieran lives in Kilmessan near the Hill of Tara in Co. Meath and he is a member of the Small Impact writers Group based in Navan.

Kieran's book is a celebration in memory of people who stood up for justice equality and rights for all. People like : Rosa Parks, Lydia Litvyak " The White Rose of Stalingrad " and our own Jim Connell author of " The Red Flag " and many more, for sporting fans there's a poem to one of Belfast's finest sons George Best.

Today I saw a White-winged butterfly

Tommy Murray has been invited to the White House

In recognition of his overwhelming success at the Battle of the Books, Tommy Murray, has been invited to the White House, on 4th August. There he will entertain the multitudes when he reads from his book, " Counting Stained Glass Windows".

Edel Gillick, from Navan, who is a member of the Small Impact Writers' Group, will launch her first book ( The Boy who Fell Down the Well ) next Thurs 17th June in the Navan library at7pm.

A beautifully written Childrens book. It tells the story of a brave young boy named Stephano who lives in a small village with his family of six sisters and two brothers. Stephano shows great courage when the local bully Alberto falls down a well.

A great night was had by all last Thursday when The Small Impact Writers Group from Navan, held a fund raising event in aid of the Kayley Dunne Appeal. It was a lively humorous event with a wonderful mixture of music song and dance along with recitals of poetry and prose from members of the writers' group.
The nights entertainment was co presented by Edel Gillick and Jim Byrne, who did an excelent job and they both read from their own work.

Thanks to all who took part and attended on the night and a special thanks to Noel Foley and his wife Mary for the use of The Back Room, one of Navan's best known session rooms.

On May 2nd 2010 I attended the annual Jim Connell Commemoration Parade in Crossakiel. It was the 12th annual event and my first time to be there and I must say, if the Lord spares me, it won't be my last.

At a meeting in Kilskyre Hall 28th March 1997 a committee was set up with a view to erecting a memorial to the famous son of Kilskyre, Jim Connell, who was born there in 1852. On 26th April 1998 a monument to Jim Connell was unveiled in Crossakiel, Co. Meath, Ireland on the spot where he addressed a crowd of 600 in 1918.

Jim Connell wrote the Song " The Red Flag " in 1889 while travelling on a train between Charing Cross and New Cross in London. It was written first to a tune called " The White Cockade " a lively Jacobite anthem but was later set to the music " Tannenbaum " and old German hymn. It quickly became the anthem of the International Labour Movement.

Congratulations to Willie Hodgins on a wonderful performance at the Boyne Readings where he was featured writer on the night. Willie put his heart in to it as he read from his book "Sunflower" but then that's where his heart is, in his poetry.
Willie was followed by an open mic session which was enjoyed by all. Somebody spilled a pot of coffee, I wonder who?

Just back from a trip to Poland where I managed to dodge the ash cloud.
Glad to see that William (Willie) G Hodgins is the featured writer at the next Boyne Writers' reading event on Thursday 20th May at 8pm in the Village Hall, Knightsbridge Village, Longwood Road, Trim, Co. Meath. Willie is a native of Bohermeen and a member of the Meath Writers' Circle. He launched his first collection of poetry titled 'Sunflower' in the Navan Library on 23rd April 2009.

Navan's Walking Bus

Over 1450 pupils from 10 primary schools in Navan took part in a record breaking attempt last Monday 26th April 2010.
They now hold the Irish record for the longest"walking bus" in the country.
Some 1454 children from second up to sixth class departed from the Fair Green and made their way around the town to set the record for Ireland's longest walking Bus measuring 216.8m.
The record attempt was part of Navan Town's Council's initiative to promote the town's bid in the Smarter Travel Competition. Navan has been shortlisted along with 10 other towns in the Department of Transports Smarter Travel Competition and has the chance to share €50m in funding over the next five years. An integral part of the town's bid is getting the local community involved and finding out their ideas on how the town should develope in terms of sustainable transport.
Schools participating in the envent were: St Oliver's NS, St Paul's NS, Scoil Mhuire, Gael Scoil Eanna, St Anne's Ns, St Joseph's NS, St Mary's Special School, Scoil Naomh Eoin and Navan Educate Together.

With The Boyne Through Trim

I don't know where Tommy Murray gets his energy he has managed to do it yet again. Tommy has just published his twelfth book ( With The Boyne Through Trim ).

It's obvious that Tommy has a great love for his home town of Trim. Tommy has well and truly put Trim on the map through his writings and dare a Navan man say it, I think the people of Trim should name their next street or perhaps housing estate after him.
I was thousands of miles away when Tommy launched his book and on my return the first batch were sold out so I had to wait a while but eventually got a copy.
In his book Tommy takes the reader on a nostalgic journey of the river Boyne from Stoneyford River to beyond Bective Abbey, a short journey one might say but one steeped in history.
Tommy's book is beautifully written and the imagery is somethingelse, ( there's nothing more miserable than a hen standing on one leg at the front door on a rainy day ), if I could, I'd give the hen a hug I thought as I read.
Thanks to Tommy a lot of Trim's recent history survives. Who for instance, especially amoung the younger generation would know that one of Trim's parish priest's was a part time farmer?.
After navigating the Boyne, Tommy then takes the reader on a ghost tour of the town, so if you'd like to know more about Trim get a copy of Tommy's book.

The book can be bought in Trim Post Office and in Antonia's Bookshop, Navan Gate, Trim, and in Trim Visitor Centre in Trim Town Hall.

Strange

Strange when you're young

you never think that your father

was once young like you.

Mine passed away a few years ago aged 92.

I was in a local store the other day browsing.

The store was full of mirrors

I happened to glance at one

and who did I see?

My father glancing back at me.

He was wearing a moustache.

I never knew him to wear a moustache

and yet it had already turned grey.

I hadn't noticed before.

He seemed a wee bit sad

I thought!

Perhaps it was the realisation

that he was getting on in years.

Then I heard a familiar voice from behind

it was my beloved wife Josephine.

Just then a smile broke out on my fathers face.

I recognised that smile

It was the smile he always had for my mother.

BOYNE READINGS

The first Boyne Readings and Open Mic session of the year took place in the Village Hall, Knightsbridge, Trim last Thursday18 February.

Paddy Smyth was master of ceremonies, Susan Connolly, and I read from our own collections to a small but appreciative audience in the Village Hall. Susan read some of her finest poems and I read prose.

Members of the audience read in the open mic session. There was a great variety of style and content to the poems and stories read, some tinged with sadness, others hilarious and Michael Regan reenacted court room dramas from his time as a legal eagle.

Tea and bickies were served afterwards and I hit the road for Navan.

Boyne Writers' Open Mic Night

The Boyne Writers', are holding their first open mic session of the year, next Thursday18 February, in the Village Hall, Knightsbridge, Trim at 8oc.

The featured readers are Susan Connolly and yours truly.

Susan Connolly lives in Droghed Co. Louth and is one of Ireland's best known poets. She was winner of The Patrick and Catherine Kavanagh Fellowship for poetry in 2001.

Her principle poetry collections include For The Stranger ( Dublin Dedalus Press, 1993 ); and with Anne-Marie Moroney, Stone and Tree Sheltering Water: An Exploration of Sacred and Secular Wells in Co. Louth ( Flax Mill, 1998 ).

Other short collections include, How High The Moon ( Poetry Ireland / Cooperation North 1991 ); Race to the Sea ( Flax Mill, 1999 ); Ogham: Ancesters Remembered in Stone ( Flax Mill 2000 ); A Salmon in the Pool ( Tearmann, 2001 ) a literary and placenames map of the River Boyne from source to sea.

Icicles hanging from the back

in wintertime.

Wind on the decline

which cut to the bone.
I'll never forget

I never would have gone in to mining " Bud said

I remember other colleagues too

the ones who survived

some scarred for life

and those who lost their lives.

And all for what.

To have our pensions stolen.

THE GUITAR

The guitar stands silent
at the foot of the stairs
waiting.
Yet it echoes in my ear
beautiful sounds
as if you were here.
I glance at the guitar and remember
every note you strummed
echoing in my ear.
Beautiful memories it brings to mind
like the time you returned with your family
Patrycja and baby daughter Amelia.
I can still see the delight in Amelia's eyes
when she saw the guitar there on the stairs.
She couldn't help but strum the strings
even though she's only two
she made a beautiful sound.
All too soon you had to go
now the guitar stands silent
at the foot of the stairs
waiting.
But still echoing in my ear
while the memories linger.

I attended the Boyne Writers Reading and Open Mic Night 17th Dec in the Village Hall, Knightsbridge Village, Trim. The night started, with Chairman Paddy Smith, showing off his new Christmas presents, they consisted of one bell and whistle.
Paddy went on to explain the rules, ( as if we didn't know them already), three minutes for a poem five minutes for prose but because of the night that was in it, he would allow two poems. If a reader was nearing the time allowed he would give a gentle ring of the bell, if they went beyond the time he would blow the whistle. Paddy gave a demonstration and I knew by the look on his face, he was dying to try them out in earnest. When it came to my turn his face began to beam with excitement. Paddy sat waiting, ready to pounce, clutching the bell in his left hand and the whistle in his right but I out foxed him by reading two very short poems. You could say, it was a case of once bitten twice shy.

The two featured writers were: Brendan Kinane and Michael Clemenger. They entertained the crowd by reading from their work.
Brendan read nine of his poems which he had in chapbook form and handed a copy to everyone in the audience
Michael read an excerpt from his book " Holy Terrors ", a moving account of the day he made his First Holy Communion. It was like as if he was reliving the event all over again. He then read a poem titled " You Were Not Destined To Grow Old ", a poem which I fell in love with the first time I read it. It stirred a lump in my throat and any poem with the power to do that is a poem worth reading. I can say the same about his book it's definitely worth a read.

Chairman Paddy Smith, wearing a crown on his head ended the nights festivities with his own version of " We Three Kings " he delighted everyone there when he burst into song and I'm happy to say it was quite pleasing to the ear.

On Thursday next December 17th at 8pm in the Village Hall, Knightsbridge Village, Longwood Road Trim, the Boyne Writers Group are holding their monthly Readings and Open Mic Session.

Featured writers on the night are Michael Clemenger who I mentioned earlier, he recently published his book, Holy Terrors, ( O'Brien Press ). I have just finished reading Michael's book and I can assure you, it is indeed, a great book. I find myself agreeing with Minister for Transport and local TD, Noel Dempsey, who, on the night of the launch said, "Michael's book should be made compulsory reading ".
The other writer is Brendan Carey Kinane who is a member of the Boyne Writers Group. Brendan wrote the winning entry in the Boyle Arts Festival Poetry Competition 2007 and he has won many awards in international poetry competitions.

The Small Impact Writers

A large crowd turned up for The Small Impact Writers Group Christmas Open Mic Session in Navan Library 10th December. Jimmy Byrne chaired the event and did a great job. There was a great selection of poetry and prose. Edel Gillick read one of her stories, something to do with Land Grabbers invading the fertile plains of Meath. Tommy Murray arrived with a contingent from the Meath Writer's Circle.

Near the end of the night things got a wee bit tense when a man got up to read and introduced himself as a Bog Monster from somewhere in the Galway region of the country. Rumour has it that Tommy Murray sneaked him in the back door aided and abetted by Willie Hodgins.

When the Monster began to read, it seemed to have a soothing affect on him and he turned out to be quite tame as he relayed a story of how he cut down his first tree with his bare hands, a remarkable feat considering he was only 8years old, mind you he had his mate with him who was 12. A number of children read stories and this seemed to please the Bog Monster.

Afterwards tea and snacks were served and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

Mission accomplished..

Holy Terrors

Michael Clemenger, who lives in Trim has written a book about his childhood,titled Holy Terrors. Michael was handed over to the unloving care of a religous run childrens home when he was a baby. When he reached the age of eight he was transferred to St Joseph's Industrial School in Tralee, Co. Kerry.
While there Michael suffered sexual abuse and beatings at the hands of the so called Christian Brothers. Despite the suffering and abuse which he endured at the hands of the religious? Michael managed to make a successful life for himself. When Michael was a young man of 20years he managed to find the mother he had never known.
Michael's books tells a remarkable story, his story, a story of courage and triumph over the Men in Black.
Michael's book will be launched in Antonia's Bookshop, Navangate Trim, this Saturday 28 November at 6.30pm.
Guest speaker at the launch will be Transport Minister and local TD Noel Dempsey.

How often have I heard the phrase," It's a small world "

I can recall my father say to my mother on occasion especially when ever he'd be a bit late home from work. " God Mollie it's a small world, you'll never guess who I met, you remember Johnny from Kells I bumped into him on the Square and he asked me if I'd like a pint and sure it wouldn't be right to say no ". Then there was the times when we visited our grandparents Cathy and Pat Donohue in Delvin, Co. West Meath and I heard the people say to my father, God, Mick Sheils from Navan well isn't it a small world?.

If my grandparents came back they would be amazed at how small the world is now. People are jetting off on foreign holidays two and three times a year. In my grandparents day it was so different if someone left the country it was up to Dublin they went for a days shopping or to get the cattle boat to England in search of work or worse still to fight other peoples wars.

There was no such thing as: television, computers or mobile phones. I did a computer course about three years ago and the inevitable happened I bought a computer.

A friend, Frank Murphy, a member of the Meath Writer's Circle and author of two books "The Marginal Line and Excursions ", told me that I should start my own blog site. Of course I was a bit weary of this and thought it would cost money. Frank said, " no it will cost you nothing, the best way I can explain it is like this, years ago when people first went to America there was so much land that the government were giving it away. They organised races people would gather at certain points and the race would begin first to reach a certain point would stake claim to that land ".
" Yeah land which was stolen from the natives ", I replied.
" I know it was wrong but I'm just using it as a analogy. There's so much space on the Internet that it's going for free and you don't have to dispossess anyone for it". Frank convinced me and after aweek of trial and error I was in business.

Old habits die hard, one saturday evening I said to my wife Josephine, I'll switch on the pc and see if I've any fanmail. Low and behold it said you have a new comment. I clicked on comment and it read, Michael thanks for the nice post, have a nice weekend, David Santos from Portugal and I thought! God, it's a small world.

In August 2002 I travelled to Australia with my son Austin. I wrote a small piece about an encounter which I had in a town called Gungadai and I posted it on my blog 13 May 2008, then on 23rd August I got a comment all the way from Australia and I thought! it's a small world. Then there was the day I rang Seamy my sister's partner on my mobile, the phone rang out and went to his message box, it was my sister Rosaleen's voice, she said, sorry Seamus is not available at the moment please leave your number and he'll get back to you as soon as possible. God I thought it realy is a small world, Rosaleen had passed away two weeks earlier. And that's a journey I'm going to have to take myself some day.
